This ideal state of meritocracy is hard to realize because not everyone has the same talents. Like so many things, the devil is in the details.

He asks, вЂњWhat is a just society?вЂќ He answers it with another question. Because itвЂ™s through the educational system as gatekeeper that defines the trajectory of many of our lives.

Sandel points to credentialism as the last acceptable prejudice and tackles the idea of how to level the playing field through equal opportunities for education. Here he says it fails to recognize the role of luck and chance and the prejudices of our institutions and systems. This meritocracy is an ideal, and however, like most ideals, it fails to reach its peak. Sandel points to this merit as promoting the idea that our destiny is not fated we have freedom and choices and we are personally responsible. We see this in most corporations, and as an employee, the idea of being paid for the impact of my contributions is empowering. The premise is that rewarding efforts, initiatives, and talent is more productive than paying everyone equally. Sandel states that merit is about creating efficiency and fairness in economic system. The philosophical questions and debates he raises are weighty ones, and they got me thinking deeply. In this post, IвЂ™m sharing some of his arguments and takeaways with some of my thoughts.
